The engine covers and switch housings were clear coated at one time. You could strip the remaining clear with a good paint stripper, brighten up the base metal with steel wool or a buffer or possibly something more aggressive if the metal is pitted deeply. Then put a fresh coat of clear over the top and you're done.
It's actually a lot of work though, and if it were me, I'd send the pieces out to get cleaned and chromed.
